Columbia Space Shuttle STS-107 NASA Ohio U.S. Statehood Quarter
- Courage that ends
in catastrophe. Glory that can never be regained. How else can we describe the
noble dreams and deeds so tragically cut short board the U.S. spaceship Columbia?
Against a backdrop of sadness
and despair, Americans everywhere have been moved to embrace the starcrossed
shuttle and everything it stood for: the incredible ingenuity that created it,
the state-of-the-art scientific research that was carried on board, the
selfless courage of the seven officers and crew. And now, its tragic place in
history.
- To commemorate the
space shuttle Columbia, it is especially fitting that
the U.S.Mint's OhioState Quarter has been selected for
this magnificent tribute. Celebrating the state of Ohio as the "Birthplace of
Aviation Pioneers", these brilliant, uncirculated coins have been
beautifully transformed and colorized by The American Historic Society into a
compelling tribute to space exploration. Many Americans don't realize that John
Glenn and Neil Armstrong are among over 20 Astronauts that call Ohio home. In fact, four Ohiostate quarters were placed aboard
the Columbia's previous mission, two of which
are now on display at the US Air Force Museum. This historic legal tender coin
features vibrant, original color artwork of the Columbia Space Shuttle Mission
Patch on the
front with the Wright Brothers' 1905 plane and a suited astronaut on the
reverse.
- The
exclusive colorization process makes owning this coin a one-of-a-kind
collector's opportunity you won't find anywhere else. And each of these
historic Ohio quarters, the 17th state to be issued by the U.S. Mint, have been
painstakingly transformed one by one into a unique collectible that will endure
for, and be appreciated by, generations. A Certificate of Authenticity
accompanies each coin.
- This coin has been
officially approved by NASA.
